In 2019 Brussels pledged a digital identity for every European. In 2024 that pledge became binding law — Regulation (EU) 2024/1183. By late 2027, banks, telecoms, insurers and healthcare providers must accept it. This tracker maps every original promise to its delivery status and to what it means for your compliance roadmap.
Every member state must offer a certified EUDI Wallet by 24 Dec 2026; regulated sectors must accept it roughly a year later. Rollout is real but uneven — Denmark's AltID went into production on 3 June 2026, the first live national wallet, while Germany's state wallet has slipped to a staged early-2027 launch and several member states remain at the developer-preview stage with no public relying-party sandbox yet. The privacy architecture is fixed regardless of pace — selective disclosure, no central database — so KYC and onboarding flows built on document collection will need redesign, not patching.
Every EU country must offer at least one certified EUDI Wallet (Art. 5a). Denmark is already live in production; most others are still in sandbox or pilot.
Banking, telecom, healthcare, insurance, energy, transport must accept the wallet — but only where strong user authentication is already required by law or contract, and micro/small enterprises are exempt (Art. 5f(2)). Very Large Online Platforms (DSA Art. 33, 45M+ EU users) must accept it too, on request.
EU goal: 80% of citizens able to use a digital ID solution for key public services. The window to shape wallet-native customer journeys is 2026–2028.
